Apparently, there are people out there growing food in their own backyards - even though they live in the city. Check out this article on Urban Farming from Wired Magazine.
The article itself isn’t very detailed, and instead serves as more of an anecdote for a growing trend (no pun intended). My favorite parts was this statistic:
Remember the victory garden? During World Wars I and II, the government urged city dwellers and suburbanites to plant food in their yards. It worked: The effort grew roughly 40 percent of the fresh veggies consumed in the US in 1942 and 1943.
Urban and suburban non-farmers grew 40% of the nations vegetables, just because the government asked?!? What a remarkable stat about how easily we can all start becoming more self sufficient. The movement would have to come from within though, the government today can barely get us to recycle 40% of our garbage, an act which requires almost zero extra work!
