A new organic restaurant opened February 16th in Denver - Organixx (tagline: Good Eats, Naturally). By pure chance, I happened to walk by the very next day. Want the inside scoop?
One word review: awesome! Seriously. Go eat there.
If my word isn’t good enough for you (yet), read on.
What type of place is Organixx? Most importantly: real food! Sandwiches and soups (and breakfasts) for less than $10. Order at the counter and then have a seat while your meal is prepared. While the “retro cafeteria” interior decor confused me at first, I came to appreciate the fact that it had it’s own style - not just a carbon copy of the two proven organic decors (#1 - dark red with coffee house vibe, and #2 - bright, light, green & clean).
Organixx mission statement boils down to roughly every real food descriptor one could think of:
“sustainable, eco-friendly, reusable, fair trade, natural, energy efficient, organic, local, green, low-impact, fresh”
(taken from their About Organixx statement)
I ordered something I don’t normally: fish tacos. “Grilled mahi mahi, roasted green chile, cheddar cheese, baby greens, avocado, tortilla wrap”. Since the description had me at “mahi mahi”, I didn’t realize it would turn out to be essentially a burrito. Funny, I probably preferred that anyway.
As I leaned in to take a bite, my brother, before swallowing the first bite of his B.L.A.S.T. (Bacon, lettuce, avocado, sprouts and tomato - he chose focaccia), said, and I quote:
“Oh my god. This is the best sandwich I’ve ever eaten.”
Now, I’m not the kind of guy who throws around descriptors like that (although, neither is he), so while I am not ready to call it “the greatest sandwich of all time”, it was incredibly tasty. I hadn’t paid attention to the other bread option, but the focaccia turned out to be a good choice: thick but still light and airy, resulting in a perfect bread-to-innards ratio (clearly I just made that term up…please help me think of a more appetizing word than “innards”).
Another reason it couldn’t be the greatest sandwich of all time? The Fish Taco was better! And oh yeah - the brownies instantly made my exclusive Top 5 Brownie List. (Complete Organixx menu)
Next time you are in LoDo (Lower Denver) check out Organixx at 1520 Blake Street (less than a block from the main bus terminal along the 16th street mall). Order tasty meal. Enjoy. Tell friends. Repeat.
If real, local, organic food is important to you, it’s crucial to support joints like this.
