Wether we like it or not, we’re all lumped into 2 categories:
- Those who cook
- Everyone else
Want to know the difference between the two? The first group has various ingredients on hand at all times. I present to you a list of non-intimidating ingredients that are always useful to have on hand:
- Flour - Most often used types? All Purpose & Whole Wheat. Pancakes, breads, desserts. Flour comes in handy often.
- Oats - Type? Rolled Oats from the bulk bin at your grocery store. Real rolled oats make you wonder why you’ve been buying packaged oatmeal for so long. Also good for granola (which is surprisingly easy to make), and the occasional baked good.
- Sugar - White sugar for baking. Brown sugar on your oatmeal is classic.
- Walnuts - Surprisingly, I use these fairly often. In granola, brownies, and on salads. I recently invented a meal using leftovers (pad thai noodles, pad thai sauce, lima beans, scallions and chopped walnuts). And yes, it was awesome.
- Garlic & Onions - I would guess roughly 50% of all recipes call for one or both of these. Plus, they keep longer than most other foods (especially the garlic)
- Eggs - Good for baking and providing last ditch breakfast options (scrambled eggs, omelets, pancakes)
- Rice, Pasta, Couscous, or Quinoa - This one is easy, and you probably already have some in your pantry. Having a jar of pasta sauce helps!
- Peanut Butter - Useful: on oatmeal, on brownies, on toast (with honey!), in the aforementioned pad thai, PB&J sandwich…
- Peppers - Many recipes call for peppers, so it’s always handy to have at least one or two big bell peppers in your fridge. Goes well cooked with onions, with your eggs/omelet, raw on salads or in veggie sandwiches…
Make sure you come home from the grocery store with these 9 things, and you’ll be more than half way to becoming one of those “people who cook”.
