Monday, I had the pleasure of arriving home to a box full of produce, ordered through a website, and delivered to my house for exactly $22.66. What was inside, you ask?

  • 8 small sweet potatoes
  • 4 zucchini
  • 2 apples
  • 2 grapefruit
  • 2 asian pears
  • 2 oranges
  • A bunch of spinach
  • 2 heads of lettuce
  • 4 onions

(Sadly, current technical difficulties make my photo of this bounty inaccessible. Regardless, it doesn’t matter what it looks like, quality and taste is what’s important…)

Door to Door Organics is essentially a CSA that runs year round. During the summer months, no matter where you order from (they deliver in Colorado, the Kansas City area , Michigan, and a handful of states on the east coast) their produce is sourced from local farms. In the winter, much of it comes from California (sadly, we can’t all have an essentially eternal growing season like they do), and occasionally as far as South America.

To be honest, this part was a bit of a turnoff for me, however I have been paying careful attention to the COO (country of origin) labels on my recent trips to Whole Foods, and guess what? Whole Foods is no better. Here in Colorado, at this time of year, most of the vegetables arrive from Mexico, and fruit - even further.

The key is quality and taste though, and how did it fare? Excellent! Nothing to even nitpick. 36 hours later the asian pears were gone (eaten by Janet), spinach & potatoes used with tilapia for dinner #1, more potatoes and onions used in tempeh hash for breakfast, lettuce for a lunch salad, and zucchini & onions used (with some local italian buffalo sausage) in the crockpot for dinner #2.

Beyond those four meals, we still have apples, grapefruit, oranges, lettuce, 2 zucchini and an onion remaining!

If you live in Colorado, the Kansas City Area , Michigan, or the east coast and organic is your priority, you cannot go wrong with Door-to-Door Organics. The service is especially great for someone who aspires to buy more organic food but is held back by higher prices at the supermarket, or lack of availability. Door-to-Door has several different sized boxes, which can be ordered as vegetables, fruits, or a combination (for reference, mine was the smallest - the Bity Box). Their website spells out what your order is likely to contain, and where it came from (both links are from their Colorado operation). Deliveries arrive every week or every other week (depending on your preference). Why drive to the store and buy more expensive produce when Door to Door Organics can deliver to your door for less?

Interested in ordering? Use the code “spinach” for $5 off your first box. Also, stay tuned. Late next week I will be announcing a contest - the winner will receive a free Bity Box from Door to Door Organics.
