Stop Swine Flu - Buy Responsible Meat

by Ryan Wanger on April 27, 2009 · 2 comments

Although the jury is out as to wether the swine flu will be an international epidemic, or just another case of media hysteria, one thing is certain: this flu came about from the unsanitary conditions of a confined animal feeding operation (CAFO).

If you needed a reason to start buying meat that is:

  • Healthier
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Humane
  • Doesn’t promote crazy viruses that kill people

THIS IS YOUR EXCUSE!

We been reducing food prices for decades at the expense of our safety. Doesn’t seem worth it when ~100 people have died, does it?

Edit: Just for clarification, this isn’t supposed to be swine flu fearmongering. I understand that pig eating meat does not spread the flu. However there STRONG INDICATIONS that this deadly flu was born in the unsanitary conditions of a Mexican CAFO. As consumers, we can vote with our dollar, and reducing the number of CAFO’s (by paying a little extra for responsibly raised meat) will go a long way towards minimizing the chances of this type of outbreak in the future.

Your title threw me off at first… but I wholeheartedly agree…. safer food, not cheaper food…. and while there will always be media hysteria with each new virus that appears, we need to all be prepared with pandemic planning.

I just wrote a post about this too! Though it is scary- I am not buying into it because there is concern it’s all a conspiracy. However many have lost their lives and it does exist. All that aside, I do agree this is a problem caused by our meat industry!
