Last Friday, Joshua from Life Seed Company was kind enough to drive 45 minutes each way to come out and give me advice about how to start my first vegetable garden. As we began talking, all the options and strategies seemed overwhelming, but by the end, I realized that you don’t need to be an expert to grow your own food successfully (easy for me to say now, right?).
Each vegetable needs a different amount of sunlight & heat, so really the main decision seems to be where to plant things based on the layout of your yard. Thankfully, my yard seems to have a good mix of cool shady areas, and warm sunny areas (especially along the south side of the house which is brick, and reflects heat extremely well - a great place for tomatoes).
Once it’s all planned out, all I will need to do is till the soil a little, plant the seeds to the correct depth, and then water and weed throughout the summer. Piece of cake, right?
If you’re interested in trying this out yourself, ask around. People you never would have guessed knew about gardening will be eager to give you advice (like my dad). Or post in the comments and I can point you in the right direction. Life Seed Company has a blog that occasionally posts detailed instructions on how to do it yourself.
You’re not too late! Here in Colorado, Mother’s Day is the time to plant the majority of your vegetables. Although we’re a bit late for cool weather crops (peas, lettuce, etc), you can still buy starter plants and put them in the ground now.
Stay tuned, I’ll be documenting my own garden with maps, photos, videos, cost, and time invested.
