Yesterday, I received my summer seeds from Life Seed Company in Keenesburg, CO. Pictured below: Basil, Thyme, Butternut Squash, Spaghetti Squash, Zucchini, Cucumbers, and Melons.
Two weeks ago, I bought some starter plants for the spring crop (because I hadn’t bought the seeds early enough - most of which do better if started inside and then moved outside once they’ve grown a bit, and the weather is nicer).
Check out the peas:
And the romaine lettuce (that’s 1 swiss chard plant in the lower right):
I’ll keep you posted on how things progress.
Have you ever grown your own food? If not, why? At the very least, maybe try growing some herbs. The instructions on this thyme include:
- “appreciated for it’s beauty, aroma, and ability to attract bees”
- “small hardy perennial shrub”
- “often used as ground cover”
- “will last for years once established”
- “likes sandy loam soil…low in fertility” (ie, bad soil!)
- “seldom need water”
If that doesn’t encourage those of us who don’t know what they are doing, I’m not sure what would! In conclusion: anyone can put these seeds in the ground and see a great result! If you need some seeds check out Life Seed Company, or visit your local nursery, hardware store, or farmers market (mine has really good starter plants).
Just make sure you don’t waste 5 minutes of your life on a “Who’s on First?” routine like Janet and I did.
“This is way more thyme than we’ll ever need.”
“Why would planting give us more time?”

Let us know how the squash comes along… I’ve had tough luck growing ANY cucurbits in Billerica. They always fall prey to powdery mildew. I’ve raised the beds, gotten soaker hoses, watered only during the day, kept weeds away, to no avail… I have a theory that the pumpkins are most susceptible and they pass it along to the squash etc…. but I’v stopped growing them for a few years….although my Rodale’s book came in the other day, so I may take another shot at it. For now it is an abundance of peas…
No matter what we do, our squash plants get powdery mildew and then turn black. We have used fungicides, sevin, water from the bottom only…….to no avail. What can I do?
